These sketch image was one of the tests that I checked the possiblity of deformation.

Classification system

This chart which needs more works to make it clear will shows me the basic order for my topic.
I want to have some hierarchy or order on my process.

The hierarchy of total process

My research has a possibility to spend a lot of time, because of there are no limitation to make a new grid pattern. It'll be toxic to go to next step, so I make the hierarchy of the total porcess.

1.Element
I will research 2D or 3D element which can build a regular pattern using its shape repetition.

2.Point
I will set some point on a line of the element shape. It become a factor which can lead deformation when it is connected to the edge point on the other side. I change the number and direction of this factor and see the differences.

3.Deformation
After setting these factor, we can get a result of the element deformation.

4.Connection
If we connect this deformation elements to the another, then we can see a result of pattern. We can assume a differnt grid system when we success to connect each other well.

As Rudi said to me yesterday, each step will be a parameter and we can try thousands if trial within that. I will think and make a several option in each step, and definitely it needs several feed-back time as well.

Summary of the refining issue.

Refinements
Grid is one of the basic language in architecture design. From big scale to small scale, this fundamental system affects to all stages in design process. For example, we can use this system dividing basic area in the schematic process, even we can use it setting a real material such as wood panel, steel plate on the outer wall in the construction process. In this reason, grid deformation which is based on the thinking of normal grid has also a various meaning and thousand of questions. So I think previous topic was too wide to manage within one quarter and decide to refine my issue, it is not related to usage of real material or designing of freeform design in its starting point. At first starting point, I just focus on the grid deformation which can give us a new design parameter and interesting composition.

Elements

For this first process, I set some rule(guidance) to research it clearly. I decide to start my research from cubic grid. In my opinion, architecture is made by the composition of volume and cubic volume represents its character well. If grid deformation starts from cubic stage, then we can easily compare the effect of deformation to normal pattern of the grid system.

Generative component

Basically I will use a Generative Component to make a simple logic which can adjust its shape by parameter. As I refer to my starting point, I make a one single cubic and set one point along a line. This point is connected to one edge point with single line. I check a deformation of cubic and thinking its composition during changing the value of parameter as 0.1 to 0.9.

First Process

Grid deformation in the cube shape. Checking a variation of the simple logic through changing the parameter which is set in G.C. program.

Arranging multiple deformation elements in a row and checking its pattern. It shows a variation of the deform and I think how can we connect each element to make a unified grid system. Below image is one of the trial that each element is connected by one single surface.

090209_First presentation summary

We had a presentation on last Monday and it was an oppotunity to make our topic more clear and obvious. I upload my presentation pages to confirm my process and I hope it will make a better communication between me and other person who still don't get a clear understanding on my issue.

  1. I make a capture image from dictionary as you can see in the left. I think I have to check the meaning of the grid at first. Normally we know it means a framework of crisscross or parallel bars. We can see this grid system everywhere in your life. If you look around in your place right now, you can find the material which use this grid system. The grid system can be the order in design, especially in the architectural design. The reason why we use this grid system is it makes easy to use a material in the construction process.
  2. We know the left one is normal grid. It has rectangular, square element in its system. But we also know there are several types of another grid system, triangles, rhombuses, hexagons. It means we already recognize about the deformation of the grid.

  3. Many architect have tried to use that methods, grid deformation. and they also have invented a new type of the deformation of the grid.

  4. These two pictures show a different side of the material treatment. In the steel mill, we can see a mass production. This means only a straight line and surface for its efficiency. But, as you can see in the right picture, if we want to use these production in the construction process of the free-form design, we have to modify each part to fit a suitable position. The size of these small triangle elements on the surface are diferent each other and they have to change the size of each element by hand. It is almost hand-craft work in 21 century. And I feel these shows us a some kind of conflict between manufacture and construction.

  5. So, I think I will focus on the grid deformation whose result on the constructive elements. Structure and facade element will be my primary issue. These two factors usually belong to the grid system and they are main element of the building design.

  6. Furthemore, I also think about the possibility of the normal material which we can use in nowadays, concrete, stone, brick, wood, plastics as suitable elements of free-form design expression.

Vornoi diagrame

As I wrote in the previous text, we could know many architects have tried to deform the existing grid system. But most of them have almost a similar construction and explanation as a character of grid system.

In this condition, there are some unique system which is absolutely different from the normal grid system in its internal character.

Vornoi diagrame has a capacity to create a new order and shape.

So, at first, I will research the method of space construction using Vornoi formular and scripting in the 'generative component' and 'Rhino' programe. Before that, I have to set my object and condition which I will make.

And second, I will research the element which is brought out from the first stage.
I will make a structural experiment and environment experiment.

Presupposition

The deformation of the normal gird system already has been started in the architecture design process.

For example, (References from the essay of Hyun-Cheol Park,2008)

Topic_Deformation of the normal grid system

As I told you at the first class, I want to research about the deformation of the grid system. In this research, the grid system means that the traditional way of making the material and visual thing what we have seen till nowadays in our life, surroundings. Before researching that, I want to talk about the reason why I will research that topic, even it seems not to be clear and definite. Historically, the grid system is developed for a long time, it is not an immutable thing itself. When people started to recognize a power of geometry in the early ages, they automatically understood the grid system and use it in their life. For example, they could make a thousand of adobe as a same size and they piled them up to make their house and palace. They could use a ruler and graduator to check size and dimension. From Vitruvius to Le corbusier, this linear based system (I want to say it is also a part of traditional grid system) was continued and even till now, most of manufacturer who produce various material keep this system in their environment.

But, from the starting point of the free-form design, it bring out serious problem between linear based grid system and curved shape from the process of the free-form design. In my opinion, it is a conflict, discord.

Recently, Toyo Ito who is an architect in japan announced his idea of the new grid system which is named as 'the Emerging Grid' in his exhibition 'the New 'Real' in Architecture 2008'. We can see many trials to overcome this unclear situation even except the case of Toyo Ito. Many architect try to make a new grid system and apply it to their new design and theory.

In my research, firstly I want to see the differences the character of normal grid system and free-form at the element level. Secondly, I look for the new grid system which is suitable for the free-form condition. It can come from the deformation of traditional grid system and it can use a non-linear formular as well.

In the next script, I will show you the general structure of this research.

The course document

Stand up architecture elective workshop:

The goal of the standup architecture workshops is to test and establish the process of analysis driven design in a well researched area to introduce students to the process of creating a hypothesis, a test case prototype a design iteration, evaluate and measure it and repeat the cycle. This should be seen as a preparation for the following semesters design research studio in which students get define their own research area around a given topic and ultimately their thesis which is completely open for them to define.
